On rare occasions, a unique product comes along outside our normal coverage that we feel is worthy of a quick look. Today, we had an opportunity to test out AviiQ’s Portable Laptop Stand, the world’s thinnest laptop stand. When collapsed, this stand comes in at 1/4” thick, 12 3/4” long, 2 3/4” wide and weighs in at 5.5 ounces.

Review
The AviiQ Portable Laptop Stand was designed for the mobile professional who is always on-the-go. Traveling lightly means only taking the bare minimum. Therefore, the suggestion of yet another add-on, even to prevent the onset of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, will surely be met with resistance, until now. Most laptop stands are bulky and take too much room, whereas the AviiQ can be compressed down to ¼” plate, making it easy to store anywhere.

Made from a lightweight composite of aluminum known as Hylite, the stand proved to be rigid and sturdy, despite of appearances. What allows the stand to be compressed in such an origami fashion is the polypropylene core bonded to the aluminum sheets. The stand has several tabs that are used to lock the stand into an upright position. These tabs are covered by black silicone footing that keeps the stand from slipping, even from the slickest of surfaces. A couple of tabs directly on top of the stand are used to elevate the laptop and keep it cool.

The stand raises the keyboard to a comfortable 12-degree incline, the perfect position when typing for long periods of time from a seated position. The stand can also be used backwards in a rotated position, when you simply cannot find a chair and are forced to type standing up. Using the stand in this manner eliminates your hands from bending at the wrist, which ergonomists warn against. The stand can be used on your lap; however you will need to make sure you have something underneath it such as a pillow or a magazine to keep it steady.

According to AviiQ’s test results, the stand showed no signs of wear, even after 5,000 folds. The stand can hold most 13” to 17” laptop computers and also works with the iPad.
