Ace Tennis 2010 HD Online for iPad Review
Tennis, anyone?! The first tennis game for the iPad, Ace Tennis 2010 HD Online blows away the competition in every way. Eurocenter has outdone themselves by providing you a visually stunning game, worthy of stacking up against any of the console offerings now in the market. It looks, sounds and plays just like centre court. Let’s take a closer look, shall we?
Review
Ace Tennis 2010 HD Online for iPad is a single player game with two game modes: single and multiplayer. It has three difficulty levels; Easy (hard court), Normal (clay court) and Hard (grass court). The single mode provides two options, a quick tutorial to familiarize you with the unusual game controls which relies heavily on the iPad’s accelerometer or entering straight into a tournament.
You have four characters to choose from; two men and two women, each with their own respective strengths and weaknesses. Once you’ve chosen, you’ll see your name appear in the tournament bracket, hit start and you’re well on your way to playing your first computer opponent with the match, given to the player who wins the first 3 games of the set. You win the tournament trophy by defeating three virtual opponents.
Multiplayer mode is where Ace Tennis 2010 HD online truly shines. Select the match-making option and the game will find someone online for you to play against or send you notification when someone wants to play. I spent most of my weekend in this mode, playing against opponents varying in skill levels. The online mode also allows you to chat with your opponent before play and during play. One of the ladies I played against was from France, who just bought her iPad. We chatted for a bit in between games, so not only is this a game, it’s become a social networking app, as well. Ace Tennis 2010 HD Online has established an online ranking system, based on the number of points you’ve accrued throughout your online career.
Controls, as I mentioned above, relies on the iPad’s accelerometer, as a virtual d-pad is non-existent in the game. Moving your player is simply a matter of tapping your thumb in the area where you want to move to and the player will hit the ball. However, the direction and type of strokes will depend directly on how you position the iPad. Tilting the device left or right will place your shots in that direction, tilting the iPad forward to hit a drop shot (good against players who like to play back at the baseline) while tilting backward will produce a lob (great against those serve and volley types).
I have to admit, if I wasn’t such a tennis addict, I would’ve given up on this game from the get go. I found the controls extremely difficult to grasp and online play have been a little buggy. On a few occasions, the connections were too slow which made shot returns choppy, delayed and some even took double bounces on the opponent’s court before the ball was returned back to my side as a fair shot. Despite these nuisances, which I do hope can be worked out on a future update, I found Ace Tennis 2010 HD Online quite fun; a game which I kept coming back to, time and time again.
