Live Cams, a popular port from the iPhone has finally made it on the iPad. Live Cams HD lets you view over 3,000 public cameras around the world anytime, anywhere on your iPad. How does it stack up compared to the iPhone app? Let’s take a look.

Live Cams HD is the iPad port of Live Cams for iPhone (Appmodo review) which was reviewed by our own editorial director, Chris Duke, last summer. The app allows you to tap into public webcams set around the world to view any number of places from famous attractions (i.e. Japan’s Mt. Fuji, Egypt’s Pyramids, etc) to watching Shamu swim around his tank at Sea World.

The app can be viewed in either portrait or landscape mode and provides thumbnail previews of twelve webcams per page. Live Cams HD gives you the option to search for a location through their built-in database, select various categories and add your very own camera (only viewed by you, unless you choose to make it public).

To view a webcam, simply tap on any of the thumbnails and a full screen view of the cam will appear. You’ll have the option to make that particular webcam a favorite, view the owner’s website (if available), take a snapshot, bring up a general map pinpointing the cam’s location and if applicable, permits you to temporarily control the webcam, allowing you to zoom, pan and tilt the camera for a short period of time.

Live Cams HD works best when connected through WiFi. It also works with 3G connection; however the images will be choppy and won’t appear as fluid as you would with WiFi connection. I have to add that I did find the quality of images displayed on the HD version of Live Cams disappointing. The thumbnail previews are stunning on the iPad; however the individual webcams, when blown up, are blurred and hard to make out. Sorry folks, the HD added to the app’s name didn’t make this app better than the iPhone version. It appears that you’re getting the same image quality that you get from the iPhone and simply made to fill the iPad screen in this version.

Recommendation
Live Cams HD for iPad is recommended to those who have not purchased Live Cams for iPhone or iPod Touch. It is a fun and addicting application that you’ll spend hours on end watching from your device. Live Cams HD is available now at the App Store for $1.99.
