Developed by an independent developer named Douglas Santos, Crossings HD is an iPad puzzle game that makes you act out those riddles you’ve always heard, such as: “There is a cat, a dog, and a man on one side of a river. The dog can’t be alone with the cat, the man can’t be alone with the dog…” and so on. “You have to get all of them to the other side of the river using a boat with two seats.” …that type of thing. The developer has constructed six mind-bending levels for you two munch on, and you need to finish them all in as few moves as possible.

Review

First of all, the graphics in Crossings HD are fairly basic, but it’s really all you need. The whole screen is divided up into small squares and one character, stretch of land, or bit of water occupies those squares. The gameplay is simplistic as well, as your sole job is to move characters or objects on and off the boat that crosses the river.

The puzzles, however, are the complex aspect of this game, and they are where the interest and replay value lay. There are currently six puzzles in all, with a promise of more to come. The puzzles steadily increase in difficulty level, leaving you with potentially several hours of gameplay. Not only does it take a while to master some of these puzzles, but the game also tells you have many moves it took you to finish. In addition to that, the notification tells you if it is possible to complete that puzzle in less moves, and therefore raising the replay value.

Tips

1. If you run into a roadblock, go at it from a different angle. There are many times in this game where only one solution seems logical, but you still can’t win with it. Stop and re-calibrate!

2. Don’t be afraid to get a second pair of eyes. Sitting in a grounded airplane for a few hours opened the door to a lot of fun for me and the person sitting next to me!

Recommendation

Overall, Crossings HD is a lot of fun. You can challenge yourself and play the game solo, or you can get a group together to help you find your way through. Either way, and especially for $0.99, you should buy this game.
