Based on the new film “Despicable Me”, Namco’s Despicable Me: Minion Mania HD is a puzzle and strategy game for the Apple iPad that stars the little yellow creatures showcased in the film. In this game, the user must make the minions work together as a team to get from one side of a board to the other side. If one minion gets to the other side, the level is complete. Minions can employ the use of rocket launchers, laser guns, and large minion cannons to get their teammates to advance. It’s a solid little game that should entertain fans of the film and mobile gamers alike.

Review

Within the few minutes, the gameplay format is quite clear and easy to understand. Touch one of the minions to control them, touch the point on the board where you want them to go, and they’ll go there. Easy enough. Along the way, minions may find weapons which help them get to the other side of the board, or may need to jump on buttons to move other parts of the board to clear a path for another minion. Whatever way you can get the minions across the board, it works.

Between the start and finish of each level, there are coins to boost your point total even higher. At the conclusion of each level, you’ll get your point totals, which could spur on a level replay down the road.

Like I mentioned earlier, fans and non-fans of the film alike should enjoy this game, as it is very straightforward, easy to play, with high entertainment and replay value.

Tips

1. Open your mind. Sometimes, when a certain game plan is not working for you, you’ll need to approach the level in an entirely new way. Don’t worry, all the levels are “winnable”.

2. The coins add up. If you breeze through all the levels without collecting the available coins, your score will be incredibly lower than if you had taken the time to go get all the coins.

Recommendation

I definitely recommend this game to anyone who likes strategy or puzzle games, and all you fans of “Despicable Me” will love it. Also, for an iPad game, the $1.99 price tag is pretty sweet.
