An ancient fortress, simply called the Citadel, has been overwhelmed by the great armies of an evil demon named Vash. In Guardians: The Last Day of the Citadel by A-Tono, Loreena Eysgaard, a captain of the Citadel’s royal guards, is wrongfully incarcerated for a crime she didn’t commit and forced to flee for her life. Can you help her escape all dangers as she runs?

Review
Guardians: The Last Day of the Citadel is a universal app for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. It’s sort of like a side-scrolling endless runner, but it’s broken down into chapters and you get to defend yourself with weapons and spells. The touch-based controls are pretty intuitive and are reminiscent of games such as Mirror’s Edge. For instance, to jump, you swipe up, and to slide, you swipe down.

There are various ways of overcoming enemies. You can either jump over them if they lunge at you, or slide at them to throw them off their feet. In addition, you can pitch throwing daggers from a distance by tapping a button, and once you are armed with a long sword, you can strike your foes down by swiping to the right. Sometimes, you’ll have to face off with an armed opponent. You can then control Loreena’s movements, including parrying sword attacks. She has a health bar, and if this falls to zero, she’ll die, and you’ll have to start again from the last checkpoint. But the game isn’t difficult, although it can get tricky to time your moves sometimes. Other than running and leaping past obstacles and opponents, you also have to collect several items, such as a bravery bonus.

Guardians: The Last Day of the Citadel has gorgeous 3D graphics (powered by the Unity engine) that will take you from the dungeons to a temple, followed by a forest and a crypt. The accompanying music and sound effects are well suited to the game’s fantasy setting. Overall, this is a fun endless runner type game with good action thrown in, plus the gameplay is easy to pick up, as you are slowly introduced to new actions and items. One downside to this game is that fast app switching hasn’t been implemented, so if you press the home button midway through a level, you’ll have to start the level all over again the next time you return.

Recommendation
Guardians: The Last Day of the Citadel is recommended to fans of side-scrolling endless running games, as well as action games. This is a universal app, currently available in the App Store for $4.99.
