Developed by Floor 84, Railroad Madness – iPad Edition is a fast-paced time and action management game that involves being the switch director on a series of railroad tracks. You must get all incoming trains to the correct stations without causing any wrecks. Do you have what it takes to handle the “madness”?

Though the entertainment value is high, this game is pretty straight forward. You are a railroad switch operator, and it’s your job to safely deliver all the trains to their stations with corresponding colors as the trains. At each railroad junction, you choose which direction the tracks go by simply touching the junction and seeing the arrow change directions. You can hit the switch to change directions an unlimited amount of times, but if you let the wrong train enter a station with the wrong color… you get a strike. Like in baseball, three strikes, and you’re out.

The player actions are easy enough. Where the variability comes in is in the game speed. You can choose from four game speeds, which drastically alter the game: slow, steady, full steam, and MADNESS. The slower you go, the more reaction time you get for each train that comes down the line. The faster you speed things up, the more action-packed the game is, and you can rack up points very quickly. It’s your call.

The are four levels that you can choose from when playing Railroad Madness for the iPad. Each level has a different railroad layout that presents its own challenges.

The game will track your high score in each of the levels, as well as automatically enter you into daily leaderboards and all-time leaderboards. When investing in a game, especially for the iPad (where games are traditionally a little pricier), you want to pick a game that maximizes its replay value. The implementation of local and cloud-based leaderboards in this game definitely boost replay value.

Tips

1. Start slow. If you start on the “slow” speed, you’ll get the pace of the game really quickly and be able to work your way up to a faster game and higher scores.

2. Switch early! If you switch trains to their proper tracks early, it will make your life a whole lot easier later because you won’t be scrambling and accidentally crash your precious cargo. In this game, you get three strikes for delivering the wrong colored train to the wrong station… but when it comes to train wrecks, one crash earns you a “game over”.

Recommendation

Right now, Railroad Madness – iPad Edition is on the Apple App store for $3.99. When you consider the long-lasting entertainment and relatively high replay value, this title is a solid buy.
