Review
Flick Tennis: College Wars HD for the iPad is a tennis game interspersed within a comic book story. You start off as a student who gains a sports scholarship into a university. From there, you’ll have to work your way up to be a top college tennis player.
In the story mode, the game is divided into 11 episodes, each of which is played on a different court. The graphics are excellent, and the swipe-based controls are pretty easy to handle, although they are far from perfect. Unlike some other tennis games, you can control the type of stroke, from ground strokes and slice shots to drop and lob shots. To obtain each stroke, you will either slide one or two fingers upward or downward on the screen. After each swipe, you will see a directional line appear, and that’s where the ball will fly; the line, however, does not always appear exactly where you swipe. The main flaw I found in the controls is that I didn’t seem to be able to control the force of each shot. Ideally, I would like to have the ball touch down wherever my finger stops. Alternatively, the shot strength could be relative to the speed of each swipe. With this lacking right now, it makes the safe boundary of the court narrower than it should be, because it seems almost impossible to hit a ball to the sides without having it go out of bounds.
Other than the story mode, you can also play an exhibition mode in which you can pick your match type (singles or doubles), your opponent’s level, opponent type (e.g. defensive baseliner, volleyer, etc), maximum games, and maximum sets. To play doubles and tougher opponents, you’ll have to first win several episodes in story mode. A head-to-head or two-player split-screen mode is also available.
Recommendation
Fans of sports games may like to check out Flick Tennis: College Wars HD, which is currently available in the App Store for $4.99. I would recommend this game more once an update addresses the lack of control over the strength/speed of each shot. If not for this one weakness, it is a fun tennis game.
