Wanna play at being a DJ? Skillz for iPad by Playpen is offering you the chance. To get the rhythmic dance music going, you’ll need to scratch at two turntables, flip the cross-fader, and tap out the sounds. Will you get booed or can you rev up the crowd into a hot frenzy?

Review
Skillz for iPad is a fast rhythm game that puts you behind a DJ’s turntables. At the start, you’ll be able to select between two DJs and five venues, which offer a total of 20 tracks of hip hop and dance music in Career mode, with an additional five to unlock after you’ve accumulated a certain number of points. These songs include remixes from Diplo, Kid Cudi, Crookers, Fedde Le Grand, People Under the Stairs, etc. Yet more tracks and another four DJs are available for download (most are IAPs, although you can currently grab two free tracks from Om Records). Through completing levels in Career mode, you can unlock tracks for Custom Play.

I confess I’ve never been a big fan of rhythm games, especially the Tap Tap series, which bored me immensely. But I actually had a lot of fun with Skillz. The reason? Skillz is one of the most complicated rhythm games around. You’ve got to employ both hands, and often, multiple fingers, to handle two decks and a wide variety of actions, from taps and holds to directional slides and scratches. Because of this, the learning curve is sharper than for most other similar games. It’s essential you go through the tutorial. And if you still can’t remember all the different symbols, which will tell you what actions you need to perform, then you should by all means repeat the tutorial. When you start playing with actual tracks, you’ll find even the easy mode isn’t all that easy. But practice makes perfect. Once you get the hang of it and send the crowd into a dance frenzy, you’ll be enjoying your new gig.

The game graphics are terrific and the music is great—if you enjoy hip hop and dance mixes. I found the controls very smooth once I figured out what I was supposed to do, and for the cross-fader you can either slide your finger or use the much easier method of tapping left or right. Whether or not you’re an expert at rhythm games, Skillz for iPad will give you the fun opportunity to train your hand coordination and DJ skills.

Recommendation
Skillz for iPad, currently available in the App Store for $5.99, is well recommended to fans of rhythm games, especially those who love hip hop. This is the game for anyone who has ever wondered what it’s like to be a DJ.
