The OtterBox iPad Commuter Series Case, like its big brother, the Defender, also offers 3-layers of protection and a self-adhering screen protector, but that’s where the similarities end. Unlike the bulky, toughbook look the Defender provides, the Commuter Series keeps the nice, thin allure that most iPad owners love most about their device. Your iPad will still have that superior protection that only OtterBox can provide and only half the weight of the Defender Case.

The Commuter Case comes in the same packaging as the Defender. In it you will find the soft silicon inner skin, the hard polycarbonate outer shell, screen protector film, cleaning cloth, squeegee and instructions for both installing the case and film. Applying the screen protector is as simple as lining up the home button cutout and slowly laying it out while using the provided squeegee to wipe away the air bubbles.

Installing the case was quite easy. Just place your device in the center of the inner skin and wrap the outer edges to your iPad. Then line up the hard shell to the grooves of the inner shell fitting it to the bottom half of the case and then moving your way up. The challenge was to make sure the headphone dock and the on/off switch covers fit through the hole of the outer shell. This will take a little bit of care and manipulation on your part but once that step is finished, you’re done!

The Commuter Case’s hatch on the lower portion of the case is also removable to allow for charging/docking with the Apple iPad Dock. Unlike the Defender Case’s hatch, I personally found removing the hatch on the Commuter Case a bit of a challenge to remove and slide off. Perhaps, this process will become easier over time. The Commuter is a great way to safeguard your investment. It’s tough, lightweight and easy to haul around. I do have to mention that unlike the hardshell cover that snapped over the iPad with the Defender Case, you must use the self-adhering screen protector that comes provided with the Commuter Case to ensure that you safeguard the screen from harm.
