Bright Bright Review for iPad

Do you remember back when you were little and Hasbro released that kids toy that was a black back-lit peg board and you could plug little colored bulbs into it to create your own designs and shapes? Lite Brite! Well, iOS-centric game developer Sunken Castles has re-imagined this old children’s pastime to evoke a little bit of nostalgic from iPad users with Bright Bright. Use a blank slate or art templates to create your own glowing designs to keep for your own collection, email to your friends, or post on your Facebook page for the world to see.

Review

To begin, you have either a clean black slate or a pre-designed template to start your design on. There is one simple drop-down menu to choose your color bulbs from. In that menu, you can also activate the backlit mode on your pegboard, as well as something that couldn’t be done in the original Lite Brite, called “Color Wave”. Color Wave mode animates your designs with a trippy rapid succession of multicolored lights.

Controlling the Bright Bright app is really easy. Just touch the “Bright Bright” logo on the top of your pegboard to drop the main menu down, and hit the logo again to retract it. After you select the color peg you want to “draw” with (which can be selected simply by touching the desired color), you can drag your finger across the pegboard to scatter the color across the board, or you can go the precision route and carefully color each peg to get your more detailed drawing.

Once you’ve completed your masterpiece, you can do several things with it: you can email it, save it to your photo app on your iPad, make a Facebook post with it, and you can even submit your piece to Sunken Castles and they will take all the submissions and share their favorites on the website!

Tips

1. Color Wave it. Draw something crazy, turn the lights off, and hit the color wave button… whoa.

2. Self-portrait. Draw a self-portrait and throw it up on your Facebook page. People will definitely want to know how the heck you got a Lite Brite picture of yourself!

Recommendation

If you’re into art apps on the iPad, or are feeling particularly nostalgic for the days of the Lite Brite, this is your app. At $1.99, it’s not too bad a price for an app you can keep going back to.

P.S. Enjoy my homage to “double rainbow” in the photo gallery below.
