For those who simply cannot get enough television programming at home or would like to catch up on a missed episode of their favorite show on the go, may want to look into Hulu Plus for iPhone and iPad. For $9.99 a month, Hulu Plus gives you can access to Hulu Plus’ library of tv programs and movies, which includes streaming in 720p HD to devices that support them.
Review
Hulu Plus offers 120 seasons and 2,000 episodes of content however, if you’re thinking about the possibility of replacing your cable subscription with this service, please note, Hulu Plus does not provide news, sports and has very limited cable programming. What this service does provide is the ability to watch full seasons of shows that are currently running on your local television which Netflix doesn’t provide.
Navigating around Hulu Plus on both the iPhone and iPad is quite simple. Once you’ve set up your account on Hulu’s website, go to the iPhone and/or iPad application and login. The iPhone app opens up to the featured videos section and you’ll just need to scroll through the list of videos beneath it or select from the navigational buttons located at the bottom of the screen. You can look through the Featured, Popular, Search, TV and More buttons, to find your favorite tv, movies, queued shows, history, and subscriptions. If you’re a regular Hulu subscriber, you’ll easily navigate through the iPad app’s interface as it is very similar to the website.
Both iPhone 4 and iPad 3G with WiFi were used for this review. However, since WiFi was not available at my location, I was limited to streaming in the shows using 3G connection. As observed, playback was surprisingly smooth and the video quality was amazingly clear. Loading times were faster on the iPhone than it was on the iPad, but that is to be expected on a larger device. I was watching an episode from Family Guy from my iPhone and when I logged on the Hulu Plus app on my iPad, it quickly gave me a prompt to continue where I left off from or to begin watching a new show. This is like the bookmark feature found on iBooks. The app remembers your last location regardless of the device. Very cool!
Unfortunately, Hulu Plus is not for everyone. For $9.99, it does come with commercials just as you would find on the free Hulu programming. However, if you’re like myself and would like to catch up on current tv shows whenever the mood strikes, this subscription service is the way to go. If you like local tv shows, I’d say go with Hulu Plus but if you’re solely in it for movies and premium cable content, then I’d have to recommend Netflix’s commercial free programming.
Recommendation
Hulu Plus is recommended to tv show fans everywhere. For those who would like to catch up with their latest tv shows and don’t mind short commercial interruptions every now and then, this subscription service is something you’ll need to check out. For $9.99 a month, you’ll have access to current tv listings in HD on your iPhone, iPad and multiple other devices whenever and wherever you go. The Hulu Plus app for iPhone and iPad is a free download at the App Store. In order to subscribe to Hulu Plus, simply fill out a Request Preview Invite at the Hulu website or through the app and once processed, Hulu will send you an email with a link to complete the subscription form for the service.
