Speck PixelSkin Review for iPad

In the epic quest to find the perfect protective covering for your iPad, Speck has released a new line of products that are certainly worth your consideration. One product, in particular, will be spotlighted: the Speck PixelSkin iPad case. It’s a rubbery soft-touch case that fits snuggly over your iPad, while giving it full body protection with a covering of square rubber “pixels”. Despite its thick rubbery exoskeleton, is the Speck PixelSkin enough to endure the tough treatment you give your iPad?

Review

The Speck PixelSkin fits very easily over the iPad, with several cut-outs for your ports and speakers. There are physical case cut-outs for your headphone port, your sync/charge cable, audio speakers, and screen lock switch. For your on/off button, volume buttons and home button, there are raised areas that cover those buttons, but still allow for you to press them.

The “pixelated” covering over the back is thick, but still has a soft touch, so it’s very protective but doesn’t have the cumbersome or clunky feeling of a hard case. When it’s on the iPad, it definitely gives the device a rugged feel that gives you confidence when you throw it into your overpacked bag.

Sadly, if you are an Apple iPad Keyboard user, the PixelSkin is too thin to connect your device to the keyboard, but it’s easy to take off quickly (like I just did).

My only slight issue with this case is that is doesn’t cover the glass. Given the fact that a majority of the cases in the market don’t protect the touchscreen, it may be a little nit-picky of me, but protecting a $500 to $1,100 investment is very important, and if you scratch the glass, it will always be there. Luckily, Speck has released a great companion product called the Speck ShieldView that is an anti-glare clear plastic covering to protect the glass. The ShieldView and PixelSkin together are definitely a winning combination.

Tips

1. Pair PixelSkin with the ShieldView. If you pair these two products together, it’s pretty much makes your iPad indestructible.

2. Don’t worry about taking it off and putting it on too much. Speck has made this case with a material that allows you to repeatedly take it off and put it on with no stretching or damage. I’ve even taken the case off and stretched it apart in my hands and it returns to its original shape. Good stuff!

Recommendation

If you’re one of those people who is still looking for the right protection for your iPad, and you don’t want to break the bank, definitely pick up the Speck PixelSkin. It’s $39.95 and available in black, indigo, and green. Like I mentioned earlier, if you’re worried about total protection with the vulnerability of the iPad glass, pair this case with Speck ShieldView and you’ll be set.
