iPad Overheats, Under Direct Sunlight for 10 Minutes

By on Apr 6, 2010 at 8:26 am

PC Magazine’s Zach Honig recently posted an image of his iPad after he received a temperature warning on his display on the popular social networking site, Twitter. This came after only using it for ten minutes outside, under direct sunlight, on a 70 degree New York City day. As a result from the overheating issue, his iPad automatically shut itself off, allowing it time to cool off.

Apparently iPads, like the iPhone, have very similar operating temperatures. However, given the iPad’s larger size and speed, it heats up much faster than it would its smaller cousin. As of now, Apple has not addressed this issue, but I’m pretty sure we’ll hear from them shortly.

Have you experienced any overheating issues with your iPad? Let us know. We’d like to hear from you.

Was poolside in 82 degree weather and got the same message after about 15 minutes. So much for reading a good book while lounging outside.

I suggest to buy a pcs of carbon fiber sheet. Put iPad on top of carbon fiber sheet and use. You will find the overheat problem disappear magically. It is reason of carbon fiber has high thermal coefficient.

Took my new iPad outside to read. It's a balmy 71 degrees in San Francisco with a nice cool breeze and 20 minutes in reading the new mystery I had just purchased to do exactly what I was doing the warning sign came on and shut down my iPad. Didn't I see an iPad ad on tv mentioning bringing the iPad to the beach to read? I am so not happy because one of the primary reasons I waited on the priority list so long was to use the iPad as a book reader. While I love all the other aspects of my iPad I am certainly not pleased with this. Maybe, however, this would explain why I received the iBooks app as a free gift!
