Are you a fan of classic asteroid shooters? Do you own an iPad? If so then Ace Omicron from ProRattaFactor is right up your alley. However if you are not into these types of games, you might want to move on.
Review
Ace Omicron is developed by ProRattaFactor, a company who has dabbed their feet with the iPhone and iPod Touch before. This time around, Ace Omicron for iPad tosses you into the role of Eden Jackson, a space ranger (not like Buzz Lightyear though) who must fight her way through the asteroid fields to survive. While asteroid shooter fans will find this game exciting, there aren’t other galaxies to explore other than fighting through a series of levels that increase in difficulty. The game includes various asteroid types, robots and UFO’s that try to destroy you, and you can upgrade your ship with glowing gems that come your way.
There are three game modes: Hyper, Twilight and Classic, which are all variations of each other ranging from no additional weapons to maxed out versions. Omicron’s graphics are in high definition with good three dimensional shapes, but they’re not jaw dropping. The game’s controls are slightly difficult to use in both portrait and landscape views, where you must point on the screen where you want to fire versus utilizing dual control sticks such as Minigore and virtually every 3D shooter on the market. The game does include a “parking brake” option that allows you to tap your ship without having it move around, allowing you to shoot at targets more accurately. The game does include OpenFeint so you can post your scores and achievements to global leaderboards or your friends.
Recommendation
Overall, Ace Omicron is a simple shooter that is perfect for fans of classic asteroid style games with decent graphics and easy gameplay. One advantage is that you can run the game on any iDevice without having to purchase additional versions, which makes the $2.99 quite attractive.
