Minigore HD Review for iPad

John Gore is back with vengeance in high definition and is ready to destroy even more furries in Minigore HD for iPad, however the poor man has the same old problems… the furries won’t leave him alone and there’s not much new content.

Review

The crew at Appmodo (including myself) are huge fans of Minigore (app review link), a successful title developed by Mountain Sheep and published by Chillingo that hit 2009 with a bang. When news broke that Mountain Sheep and Chillingo were working on a version for the iPad, all of our ears perked up.

However after getting our hands on this new version of the title, we agree that we are slightly disappointed at the lack of new content or even new maps. Now Mountain Sheep did include all of the premium characters from the iPhone version for free on the iPad, a plus in our eyes, however you still have to work and play the “same old story” as the iPhone which requires hours of killing to unlock the characters you want (seems easier just to purchase them). Mountain Sheep did include a new Zombie character with dual machine guns and a new furry called “Predator” which jumps out from bushes, however both additions can be found in a recent update on the iPhone version. The company also switched over to Crystal for social networking, which is an improvement over OpenFeint on the iPhone version.

A new optional control scheme was introduced for the iPad version called “touch2go”, which uses a touch interface to command Mr. Gore around. However, I found that using the classic dual joystick control scheme is made for this game and nothing else, as it is much easier to use.

Graphics wise, Mountain Sheep and Chillingo did an awesome job of delivering quality high definition graphics and effects that offer a great 3D realm. The attention to detail really is amazing, even down to the gun shots, shadows, and surrounding fence. I think that taking the current platform and allowing it to be compatible with 3D glasses for a true 3D gaming experience would help sell this title indefinitely at a $4.99 price point, but without any new maps, weapons or even abilities (such as evade or jumping), it is somewhat hard to sell the title to a new gamer who hasn’t already gotten their share on the iPhone.

Recommendation

Overall, Minigore HD is an extremely fun high definition shooter with a lot of potential on the iPad, but without the addition of any new content, it leaves us scratching our heads as to why Mountain Sheep or Chillingo didn’t release any upon launch. Minigore is an awesome title from the iPhone that has much potential, it just needs to be executed correctly with new content that helps move the plot.

If you can’t get enough of the iPhone version and want a taste of more blood, Minigore HD can be purchased for $4.99.
