The game we all grew up with has made its way to the iPad. Little Hangman, designed for children from grades K-6, is a good educational tool to help build your kid’s vocabulary and also allows you to add words of your own!
Review
Little Hangman for iPad plays just like the classic version in either portrait or landscape mode. Here you must choose the correct letters to fill in the blanks before the hangman is drawn. Get the word right and you will be treated with a screen filled with colorful balloons and the word “Congratulations.” Get it wrong and a plane will fly across the screen to reveal the correct word. You are allowed a total of six incorrect letters before the hangman is completely drawn and you lose the game.
The game offers three different backgrounds that include a chalkboard, a graph paper and a brick wall. You may choose the level of difficulty by selecting the child’s vocabulary level from Kindergarten through Grade Six, or by simply having words which cover specific subjects such as animals, plants, body part, food and geography. A challenge mode is also included in the game that allows you to enter your own word and to have another player guess it.
Controls are fairly self-explanatory. Simply tap on the letter you want to use and it’ll either appear under the empty blanks or a body part will be added to your hangman drawing. It took several taps on individual letters before it registered during gameplay. There are no touch control sensitivity adjustments offered in the game, therefore something must be done to correct this. Graphics are kept basic and colorful which suits Little Hangman quite nicely. Game sounds are kept to an absolute bare minimum and will only produce noise once you receive a hangman or guess the word correctly. In my opinion, the developer should’ve added a ping noise or some sort of audio indicator each time a letter is selected from the group and a scoring system to keep the kids motivated to do better each round.
Recommendation
Little Hangman for iPad is a good beginning. However, in my opinion, this educational app falls short in justifying its $2.99 asking price. Little Hangman is now available and can be purchased at the App Store.
