Mishap: An Accidental Haunting Review for iPad

Namco, cross-platform and console game developer, introduces the iOS adaptation of a PC-based detective game called Mishap: An Accidental Haunting for the iPad. The Burton Estate has become haunted and you must work together with the paranormal investigator, Milton Hobblepop, to research around the house in order to get rid of the ghostly house guests.

Review

Mishap: An Accidental Haunting is a hidden-object type of game where you explore various rooms in the Burton Estate (which, of course, are all messes) to search for items that Mr. Hobblepop needs to complete his paranormal research. You are given a list of needed items, which is located on the bottom of your screen, and you have navigate through nooks and crannies of the room, mini games, and secret passageways to get what you need. Along the way, you will encounter ghosts, clues that contribute to a big riddle, and surprise mini games.

The first thing of note about this game is the graphics. Graphics are what strikes the gamer before anything else, and Mishap: An Accidental Haunting succeeds on that front. The look of this game is a cut above, and feels very console or PC-grade.

My minor qualm with the game is the seemingly low replay value. Once you find all of the items on your lists, you’re finished with that part of the game, and have no reason to return to that part of the game anymore. Don’t get me wrong, when you’re in the game, it’s great, but there is no measurement of success in the game (i.e. speed of completion, leaderboard integration, etc.) that would pull you back in.

Tips

Look through the spectacle. There is a spectacle icon in the bottom-right part of the screen that will give you a hint as to where the action is in the room. Looking through this will help you a lot.

Recommendation

If you’re into hidden object-style games, or you like Mishap: An Accidental Haunting on the PC, give the iPad version a shot! The game is coming out very soon on Apple’s App Store!
