For thousands of years, books have been used as a way to transcribe historical events, thoughts, stories, and images onto paper (and various other materials) for reading at a later time. Flash forward to modern day history beginning in the 1970′s, books have made their way onto an electronic format dubbed “e-Book” to be used on “e-Readers”. The two most common e-reader devices used today are Amazon’s Kindle and Apple’s iPad, however the iPad offers additional experiences that are changing the way both children and adults are reading books.

iBooks has been updated to version 1.1. The update now makes iBooks a universal app supporting both iPhone and iPod Touch, also adding several improvements, as mentioned at the WWDC Keynote by Steve Jobs. Here’s the breakdown:

In his WWDC 2010 keynote this morning, Steve Jobs announced iBooks, the iPad’s e-book reader, will be receiving some updates with the addition of a PDF viewer and bookmarks.
European Publishers Fail To Reach Deal with Apple

According to a report by The Bookseller, Apple continues in their struggle to reach a deal with European publishers for their iBookstore. Currently, the only titles available to iPad owners in Europe are from the Project Gutenberg’s collection of free classic books.

Although it has been reported that only 365 people purchased the GQ, December 2009 Men of the Year, iPad Edition, the publisher remains in high spirits. “This costs us nothing extra: no printing or postage. Everything is profit, and I look forward to the time when iPad issue sales become a major component to our circulation.”

Oprah Winfrey, when speaking with Omar Wasow, tech analyst, in a recent show, called the iPad “amazing.” She spoke of the device’s interactive interface, allowing books to “move” and stated the new iDevice as a game changer when it comes to the way kids learn.

The folks at Atomic Antelope have brought Alice’s story (Alice in Wonderland) to life in their interactive rendering of the book in Alice for the iPad. The book includes 52 pages of storyline with 20 animated scenes. Throw darts at the Queen or tilt the iPad to make Alice grow or shrink. There’s so many amazing features in this book that it’s clearly one of the must buy apps for the iPad platform.

The pages are brought to life by allowing you to interact with the elements by letting you touch, rotate, zoom in, including the ability to view the objects in 3D by using a cheap pair of 3D glasses (available through their website).

Medical Encyclopedia Debuts First on iPad

Mogeneration’s Carter’s Encyclopedia of Health and Medicine makes its first debut on the iPad, before print and iPhone editions hit the stores. This app, made to feel like an actual medical encyclopedia has over 12,000 entries equal to 1,800 pages worth of material.
